4/16_Appeal Homework

For this assignment we had to pick 20 of our most appealing sketches thus far! I chose a lot of my caricature work and sports oriented gestures.  I chose these because the caricature work is appealing for me as an artist and the line of action shown in the sports gestures caught my eye amongst all my other gestures.

3/13_Homework (Sharks)

For homework this week we had to draw animals and I chose the great white shark! I watched three various videos to see how they swim and how they hunt by leaping after seals in the air. It was really nice capturing how they turn their body.

2/14_Homework (Olympic Sport)

Following the fast pace of the skaters and their various movements was difficult,  especially with the camera angles constantly changing during their routines. Having the TV go back and show a slowed down view of them skating was very easy to work with though! 

2/9_Homework (Dancers)

For homework the task was to draw a specific form of dancing from a video/DVD/youtube/etc. I chose to draw from a dance number in the King and I called 'Small House of Uncle Thomas', which is a play within the actual play. The dance poses are very angular and focused on balance, which I felt would be fun to tackle. It was pretty easy to grasp the poses since they're normally held for a longer period of time. Especially for the background dancers. Simon of Legrees segment was difficult however because he is constantly moving and twisting everywhere.

1/17_Draw Your Favorite Thing Homework

For my first homework assignment in Cafe Sketch I chose to draw from the Hobbit! But specifically from the behind the scenes production videos on the extended edition DVD. It had some wonderful 'dwarf boot camp' workouts that allowed for some fantastic poses.

It was a challenge to figure out where legs or arms were at times when actors were curled into themselves. Especially Andy Serkis in his motion capture suit as Gollum. When all black clothing is worn figuring out what is happening in a pose can prove difficult.
